Slain doctor Luping Zeng’s funeral service to draw crowd
Family and friends of murdered doctor Luping Zeng will gather today for a funeral service.
A funeral will be held today for Luping Zeng, the Brisbane GP shot in his garage in an alleged opportunistic robbery attempt.
Family and friends will gather at Holland Park’s Mount Thompson Memorial Gardens at 9am for the service, staff at his medical clinic confirmed.
Billy Smith, 20, Joshua Hamilton, 19, and a 17-year-old boy who cannot be named for legal reasons have been charged over his murder. As the three accused killers await court hearings, a mound of floral tributes remained under a tree across the road from Dr Zeng’s home in MacGregor yesterday. Dr Zeng, 56, a skin care specialist, migrated from China in 2000 and had more than 30 years’ medical experience.
He was allegedly ambushed by the men at 11.40pm on Monday, April 15, in what police say was a random attack. He did not know his alleged killers, and appears to have been targeted because his garage door was open in an up-market suburb where high fences protect stately homes.
His wife, also a doctor, and two daughters, who are trainee doctors, were at home at the time but did not see him gunned down.
Detective Superintendent Tony Fleming yesterday said police were preparing a full brief of evidence.
The gun used in the shooting had not yet been found.
Dr Zeng, who worked at the Waterford 7-Day Medical Centre and Skin Cancer Clinic, was known as a “particularly hardworking and very capable” doctor whose death was a tragedy.
The 17-year-old will appear in the Children’s Court on June 10. Mr Hamilton is due in court on May 13 and Mr Smith on June 3.
