Share your memories of the moon landing
As the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 approaches, we want to hear about your memories from the time.
On July 20, 1969, 500 million anxious viewers around the world sat glued to their television sets, preparing to witness history. Eight years earlier, US President John F Kennedy had set the goal of “landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth”, and Neil Armstrong, Commander of Apollo 11, was about to fulfil that mission and become the first person to set foot on the lunar surface, taking “one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”
The historic moment was broadcast live from the Moon’s Sea of Tranquility to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, and then on to televisions around the globe, becoming the most-watched TV event at the time.
As we approach the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, we want to hear from those who witnessed the incredible event from Earth. Where were you when the landing took place? What was the atmosphere like? Do you have photographs of the moment? Perhaps this one small step for a man sparked a long-lasting interest in space and adventure?
