A schoolboy is “very lucky” to not have been more seriously injured after being impaled by a javelin during a PE lesson in a freak accident at a prestigious Gold Coast school.

Students were on the oval of St Stephen’s College at Upper Coomera on Wednesday morning when shortly before 11am a 12-year-old boy fell onto a javelin that was stuck in the ground.

Paramedics were called to treat the “significant injury” to the groin, with the school nurse providing immediate first-aid.

Queensland Ambulance operations supervisor Stuart Cutajar said the boy was lucky.

“I think, yeah, very lucky, my word,” Mr Cutajar said.

“(He) treated effectively on scene, the paramedics did a great job. I need to mention they (the school) were excellent in their approach and their structure. The function they performed was fantastic.”

Fire rescue crews were also on scene to cut off the ends off the javelin to make it easier to move the year 7 student for treatment at Gold Coast University Hospital. He is reportedly in a stable condition.

A spokesperson for the College said support is being offered to the family and students.

“A sporting incident has occurred during a PE lesson this morning with a Year 7 student receiving non-life-threatening injuries while retrieving a Javelin,” they said.

“The student’s parents were immediately contacted and support is being offered to those impacted by the incident.

“The welfare of our students remains the number one priority of the College.”
