Witness statements tendered by Linda Reynolds’ parents Laith and Janice Reynolds on Wednesday detailed the pain that what they called the “Brittany saga” had caused for them and their daughter.

Mr Reynolds recalled meeting Ms Higgins during the 2019 election campaign at a party at the home of then-MP Ken Wyatt.

He said Ms Higgins had approached him at the party.

“She was very nice, appeared to be ebullient, joyful, and she told me that she was delighted to be working with Linda. She said it was her dream job. She told me she was looking forward to travellling around and seeing more of Perth and, if possible, outside of Perth,” he wrote.

“I found her a delightful young woman and enjoyed speaking to her.”

In 2021, after Ms Higgins went public with the allegations, Mr Reynolds flew to Canberra following Senator Reynolds’ hospitalisation with heart problems.

“I was stunned to see my daughter lying there with tubes coming out and looking so damaged. She was also distraught,” he said.

Mrs Reynolds said that her and her husband were devastated by the allegations that their daughter had mishandled Ms Higgins’ rape allegations.

“I have read every word I can find of this dreadful saga, however much it hurt. I felt that I needed to know everything that was being said, knowing that if it was awful for us, how much worse it was for Linda,” she wrote.

She wrote that conduct of The Project’s Lisa Wilkinson was “especially galling”.

“It was unprofessional, to say the least. It was obviously orchestrated for maximum effect,” Mrs Reynolds wrote.

Statements of Reynolds' parents to be issued

It has been a short day of proceedings in Linda Reynolds’ defamation action against Brittany Higgins.

Proceedings have now concluded for the day after the court agreed to accept written statements from Senator Reynolds’ elderly parents Janice and Laith Reynolds, instead of having them give their evidence in person.

Justice Paul Tottle has authorised the release of those statements to the media.

Higgins was lying, Reynolds told staff

Linda Reynolds told her staff that Brittany Higgins was “lying” after she broke down inside Parliament House, her former media adviser has told the WA Supreme Court.

Nicky Hamer, who was a media adviser to Senator Reynolds between 2019 and 2021, has been cross-examined by Ms Higgins’ legal team.

Ms Hamer was asked about an incident, about a week after Ms Higgins went public with her allegations that she had been raped inside Senator Reynolds’ Parliament House. Senator Reynolds, Ms Higgins’ lawyer said, had entered her ministerial office in a “distressed state”.

“Do you recall her saying Brittany was lying and it wasn’t true?,” her lawyer asked.

“Yes,” Ms Hamer replied.

That comment followed Senator Reynolds’ reaction, when Ms Higgins first appeared on The Project, in which she described her former staffer as a “lying cow” in front of her ministerial staff.

Senator Reynolds ultimately apologised to Ms Higgins over that description and made a $10,000 donation to charity as part of a settlement.

Morrison: rape allegations ‘weaponised to discredit me’

Scott Morrison has made explosive claims that Brittany Higgins’ rape accusations were weaponised to discredit him personally, as the former prime minister revealed the aftermath left him fearing for his then-defence minister Linda Reynolds’ life and that he was forced to demote her to protect her health. How Higgins was failed by her 'team'

Most of Brittany Higgins’s high-profile ‘supporters’ are better described as enablers. They bear a great deal of responsibility for how long and how badly this saga has turned out for her. They occupy an inverted moral universe. Read more here

Former media adviser to give evidence

Linda Reynolds’ former media officer will be the key witness in today’s proceedings as the senator’s defamation trial against Brittany Higgins resumes.

Nicky Hamer was working as a media adviser to Senator Reynolds in 2019, at the time Ms Higgins was allegedly raped by colleague Bruce Lehrmann.

She was also part of a night out with Mr Lehrmann and Ms Higgins weeks earlier that has already been mentioned earlier in the proceedings. Senator Reynolds said during her testimony last week that she was aware there had been an issue among her staffers and Ms Higgins – who was not yet working for the senator at that time – that evening and that Ms Hamer had tried to resign by email that night.

The senator’s elderly parents had originally been scheduled to also give evidence today but are now expected to lodge witness statements instead, meaning we are looking at a shorter day in court today.
