Radio shock jock Kyle Sandilands faces tribunal over gun license
Controversial radio shock jock Kyle Sandilands has appeared in court after his application for a gun license was refused.
Radio shock jock Kyle Sandilands has taken his fight to have a gun licence to court after police refused his application.
Sandilands, 50, is taking the NSW Police Commissioner to the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT) to appeal the decision.
Solicitor Tom Bateman appeared for the KIIS FM star at NCAT where the matter was briefly mentioned on Tuesday.
A hearing date was set for March 7.
The court heard the Police Commissioner and Sandilands would need to serve evidence to the court by early to mid February.
Sandilands has long had an interest in guns.
He is understood to visit a pistol club a few times a month for shooting practice, where he is instructed by a professional shooter.
But it has been reported that after making an application for a gun licence in September this year, he was told by police it would not be granted.
An application for a gun licence or permit in NSW may be refused if police determine the applicant is “not fit and proper to possess firearms without danger to the public safety or to the peace” or “does have a genuine or legitimate reason for obtaining the license or permit”.
The NSW Firearms Registry carries out personal history checks on all licence applications, which includes considerations of public safety.
In 2020, Sandilands took 60 Minutes host Karl Stefanovic to a Los Angeles shooting range, telling him it “gets the adrenaline out”.
Sandilands has previously made comments about guns and firearms on his radio show.
During a segment in October, Sandilands discussed Alec Baldwin’s accidental fatal shooting of a cinematographer on the set of the film Rust.
“I use live ammunition weekly and the protocol in live ammunition is very strict. You’ve got to be careful where you point it, hold it, everyone’s counting everything,” Sandilands said.
