The Covid-19 vaccine rollout has gathered pace across Queensland’s remote Indigenous communities, with some recording the highest rates in the state.
More than half of adults in the Torres Strait Islands have been vaccinated and up to 85 per cent in some Cape York communities have received at least one jab, with the follow-up due in two weeks.
The rollout was suspended earlier this year after the state government halted use of the AstraZeneca vaccine because of the small risk of blood clots.
The region had been identified as a priority because of the greater risk Covid-19 posed to Indigenous people and proximity to Papua New Guinea, where case numbers have soared.
The high proportion of those receiving the first Pfizer jab has been replicated across most Cape York, with most leaders reporting rates above 70 per cent.
