Queensland Police to press murder charges after suspicious death of baby boy in Brisbane

Queensland Police say they have enough evidence to charge two people with the murder of a seven-month-old boy at a suburban home on Brisbane’s northwest outskirts.

A couple has been charged with murder and torture over the death of a seven-month-old baby found with “confronting” injuries at a home northwest of Brisbane.

Paramedics were called to the semi-rural property on Mount Samson Rd at Yugar at 6.45am (AEST) on Thursday and found the baby boy dead.

The child’s father, Reinhardt Bosch, 33, and his 22-year-old partner, who live at the home, were taken into custody at the scene after police were called by ambulance officers. They were charged on Thursday evening with one count each of murder and torture.

The identity of the woman is not publicly known.

Inner West Crime Group Detective Inspector David Jackman said earlier that the “confronting” physical injuries found on the child were strong enough evidence to lay a murder charge.

“I’m not at liberty (to describe the injuries) but enough to say we are confident to charge the two people with murder,” Inspector Jackman said.

“Circumstances leading to the death, we will allege, have happened in the last 24 hours.”

Police would not confirm the relationship of the woman to the man or child, but said they were the only residents living at the property.

A private social media page for Mr Bosch quotes a passage from the Bible under his name.

“And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purposes,” the page says, quoting Romans 8:28.

Inspector Jackman said the crime scene was one of the “most confronting” he had seen in his three-decade career.

“Any homicide is confronting,” he said. “However, when you deduce the age of the victim, it certainly hits home.

“I’ve been a detective for 30-odd years. It is one of the most confronting scenes that I’ve seen.

“They (children) are defenceless … It is not pleasant, no”

Inspector Jackman said the couple was “upset”.

It is unclear if either attempted to help the child before the father called paramedics.

Queensland Ambulance Service could not reveal the injuries the boy had sustained because of the ongoing investigation.

There was no indication that the baby had any underlying health issues that could have contributed to his death, and he did not appear to be malnourished.

Investigations by detectives from the Inner West Child Protection and Investigation Unit and Criminal Investigation Branch will continue, with the family and those known to the child being contacted.

Inspector Jackman said it was fair to allege the case was “strong”.

“At this stage, we are only less than 12 hours into our investigation,” he said.

“We will be going back through family history, speaking with family and such (about) whether or not they were aware of anything that may have led to this.”

Because of the semi-rural location of the property, which is hundreds of metres from adjacent properties, doorknocking of neighbours by police had uncovered “nothing untowards”.

“Significant” investigations were conducted throughout the day on Thursday at the home where the baby was found, with the crime scene at the property shut down overnight.

A post-mortem examination of the child is to be conducted.

The man and woman will appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday.
