Queensland beaches, parks packed as restrictions relaxed
Queensland’s public spaces were teeming with life for the first time in weeks on Saturday, with significant restrictions lifted.
Queensland’s parks and beaches were teeming with life for the first time in weeks on Saturday morning after the state relaxed some of its coronavirus lockdown restrictions.
As of Saturday morning at 12.01am, Queenslanders are now allowed to travel up to 50km from their homes for “recreational purposes”.
People can drive for non-essential reasons, have picnics, visit parks, shop for non-essential items, go fishing and ride motorbikes for fun.
Social distancing rules still apply, with members of the same household allowed to venture out together and those who live alone allowed to go out with one other person.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has asked all residents “to enjoy the relaxation, but continue to follow the rules”.
Queensland recorded one additional COVID-19 case on Saturday, a returned overseas traveller who contracted the virus on a cruise ship.
The state had recorded no new cases for five days in a row prior to Saturday.
Queensland’s Health Minister Steven Miles said there were 63 active cases in the state.
“This is the result of these low, ongoing numbers of new positive cases,” he said.
