Welcome to The Australian's live political coverage amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

A person who attended yesterday's protests in Melbourne's CBD is being treated in one of the city's hospitals for Covid, the Victorian health department has confirmed.

Western Australia Premier Mark McGowan has warned all residents from his state who are in Victoria to be vaccinated and return home immediately - or be locked out as he says the southern state may join NSW in being deemed an 'extreme risk'. A promise by protesters opposed to lockdowns and vaccines to wreak havoc in Melbourne 'every day' has flamed out amid bickering, and the prospect of police intervention. Victorians stranded in NSW can return home if they are double vaccinated from September 30. Victoria recorded 766 new local Covid-19 cases, its highest ever daily total, surpassing the 2020 peak. NSW added 1063 new cases and six deaths.
