Yassmin Abdel-Magied has brought up a lack of diversity in federal politics as an explanation for last week’s Liberal leadership chaos in a television interview on Tuesday night.
“If anyone ever says to me that women can’t do something or like people of colour are not able to do something, I would be like, ‘Is this the best you white men can do?’”
Appearing on Ten’s The Project, Abdel-Magied said the politicians involved in the events of last week were “taking the piss”, and described the fiasco as “honestly offensive” to Australians.
“Don’t come at me with chat about merit or quotas because it’s a pretty low bar,” the 27-year-old said. “As an Australian, we deserve better”.
“It’s like the Australian politicians are playing some sort of game in their own world and not really taking seriously the fact that they are running a country.”
The 27-year-old sparked controversy on Anzac Day in 2017 with her tweet “LEST.WE.FORGET. (Manus, Nauru, Syria, Palestine...)”.
Abdel-Magied is briefly back visiting Australia after moving to London last year.
