Opposition Indigenous Australians spokeswoman and prominent No campaigner Jacinta Nampijinpa Price said her parents were “egged” during an interview with Sky News.

“It was disappointing though that I’ve come to learn that during their interview with Sky, someone had thrown an egg at my father,” Senator Price told 2GB on Monday.

“And some people at some point had thrown paint at their home.”

She said her parents were now a “target” of some “nasty people” in Alice Springs who were not happy about the result of the referendum on Saturday.

‘So proud’: Jacinta Price’s parents praise Senator’s campaigning efforts

“They shouldn’t have to put up with that kind of nonsense, nobody should have to put up with that kind of nonsense,” she said.

She said she was exhausted and still coming to terms with the referendum result, with a sense of sadness still for the people who thought those that didn’t support Yes were “racist”.

“I’m just hoping that doesn’t turn into further resentment, we need to work together to solve our problems,” she said.

Senator Price said people should feel more optimistic about Australia’s future, adding that empowerment doesn’t come from a government or anything external.

“If we don’t, we can’t, we can’t progress forward if we’re constantly you know... guilt politics is stifling, the victim mentality is stifling, grievance does not bring about forward movement,” she said.

She said it was a negative approach and a push to promote a “victim mentality” in response to reports some council areas in Sydney would fly their Aboriginal flags at half mast today.
