Simon Birmingham: Lib values are more in line with public than Labor
Simon Birmingham says election victory shows the Liberal Party’s values are more in line with the Australian public than Labor’s.
Trade Minister Simon Birmingham says the Liberal Party’s values are more in line with the Australian public than Labor’s, with the Coalition winning seven of the nine last federal elections.
Senator Birmingham said Scott Morrison’s stunning election victory was testament to the Coalition’s connection with the Australian people.
The Prime Minister’s new ministry will be sworn in by Governor-General Peter Cosgrove at Government House in Canberra this morning.
“The Liberal and National parties have now won seven of the last nine Australian elections. It is a real demonstration that our values and our approach in terms of our connection with the Australian people are strong, are rich and deep in that sense that we do enjoy this long record of success from the Australian electorate,” Senator Birmingham told Sky News.
“But that is only because of the way in which we seek to govern and apply ourselves relates to the Australian people in terms of recognising that it is about them and their aspirations.
“Not government saying ‘we have got the solution to everyone’s problems’ but backing in Australians who want to be able to get ahead, to build a nest egg for their retirement, to be able to have confidence that their children and grandchildren will have jobs.
“These are the sorts of values and principles that we have spoken about for a long time and you see in Scott Morrison now a leader who wants to take that forward.”
Senator Birmingham said Mr Morrison has told the new frontbench team to work hard for the Australian people.
“The message that Scott has reinforced to me and to every single member of the team is that we are here, of course, to work for the Australian people and our job to work on their behalf as a result of that election victory,” he said.
“To deliver for them a stronger economy that we promised, to manage that well, to create the jobs that we managed to do. But also to make sure that dealing with government is as easy as possible for Australian people.”
