Queensland Premier ditches 'smart state' slogan

QUEENSLAND has surrendered bragging rights to being the "smart state" after Premier Campbell Newman junked the slogan of his Labor predecessor, Peter Beattie.

Mr Newman's move to "retire" the brand comes only days after his LNP government moved away from the Beattie "burger" corporate logo.

Mr Newman said trademarks for "Queensland the Smart State and "the Smart State" had expired this month, and renewing them would have cost $217,088 over the next 12 months.

"This would have been an unwarranted cost to renew the trademarks which were not used," he insisted.

The slogan will no longer appear on car number plates after the last 20,000 in stock run out.
