Protesters storm Scott Morrison’s front yard with powerful message

Lismore flood survivors have delivered a powerful message at the front gates of Scott Morrison’s Sydney residence.

Flood victims protest outside Kirribilli House

A protest was held at the gates of Scott Morrison’s Sydney residence on Monday morning to highlight the federal government’s response to the northern NSW flood crisis.

At least nine Lismore residents transported a tip truck full of flood-damaged possessions to Kirribilli House.

The protesters arrived about 7.30am and parked their truck within metres of the Prime Minister’s home.

Australian Federal Police and local police units blocked the road at Kirribilli Ave, making it impossible for the truck to drive directly up to the gates.

Kudra Falla-Ricketts, the 24-year-old activist who ran as the Greens candidate for the federal seat of Page in 2016, was among the protesters.

“I don’t want this to happen to anyone else,” she said.

Mr Morrison was not at home. Undeterred, the protesters took to carrying items – including a rug, chairs and Elmo soft toy – to the front gates of the residence.

The protesters said Mr Morrison was responsible for the flood because of his ongoing inaction on the climate crisis.

A front door had been turned into a makeshift sign with a message scrawled across it that read: “Morrison, your climate mega flood destroyed our homes.”

The protest came despite just 11 per cent of people in flood-struck Brisbane, northern NSW and western Sydney blaming climate change for soaring home insurance costs.

This falls to 7 per cent in NSW’s devastated Northern Rivers district – where hundreds remain homeless in the city of Lismore – with insurer profits, government inaction and local government planning bungles seen as more responsible for making premiums there increasingly unaffordable.

Only 11 per cent of those surveyed said Canberra carried the can for funding flood mitigation and measures to protect homes from the impact of extreme weather events.
