One Nation leader Pauline Hanson says independent senator Lidia Thorpe should be investigated by police after she was captured on video outside a strip club at 3am yelling profanities.

The senator responded to her critics on Monday, saying it was “sad people are using whatever they can to drag me down when we’re trying to discuss important issues in this country”.

Video footage shows the former Greens senator leaving the Brunswick club at about 3am on Sunday morning while celebrating a friend’s 50th birthday. She was shown shouting obscenities at men standing outside.

The manager of the strip club says the rogue senator was going up to white men before the incident saying: “You stole my land.”

Senator Hanson said police should be “carefully examining the footage to determine if Senator Thorpe has broken the law”.

“The Australian Human Rights Commission might also consider examining the footage for possible breaches of Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act. I think the people subjected to her abuse on the weekend should come forward,” she said.

Thorpe ‘highly unlikely’ to be suspended from parliament following strip club incident

A senior opposition source told The Australian there was “no doubt that if Lidia Thorpe was in one of the major parties, or a bloke, everyone would be calling on her to go”.

“The Greens never called out her bullying or her bad behaviour,” they said.

Senior Labor frontbencher Tanya Plibersek said Senator Thorpe’s behaviour was “obviously unacceptable”.

“It doesn’t matter whether you’re a member of parliament or your average person. I think that sort of behaviour in public is just not acceptable. As for whether the parliament should have an ability to intervene … that’s something you’d have to consider very carefully,” she said.
