Michaelia Cash orders coal long service leave probe
The Attorney-General has announced a review of the government corporation managing the long service leave of miners of black coal following lobbying from One Nation.
Attorney-General Michaelia Cash has announced a review of the government corporation managing the long service leave entitlements of miners of black coal following lobbying from One Nation, which has been highly critical of its governance.
The Coal Mining Industry (Long Service Leave Funding) Corporation manages more than $1.9 billion, and 128,000 workers are accruing long service leave through its scheme.
Senator Cash said the review would consider Coal LSL’s performance, and potential measures, including legislation, to improve the adequacy and transparency of the scheme, as well as public confidence in it. “This review is critical in ensuring the scheme, and the corporation that manages it, is a model for the highest standards of governance of worker entitlements with appropriate and robust safeguards in place,” she said.
One Nation senator Malcolm Roberts, who has been lobbying for an inquiry and worked with the government on the terms of reference, said the make-up of the board “means that no one is representing the workers”.
