Queensland’s Liberal National Party has accused Premier Steven Miles of delivering a big-spending budget solely focused on getting himself and Labor elected in October.

LNP treasury spokesman David Janetzki said while the opposition recognised the need for cost-of-living measures for Queenslanders, the budget failed to present a long-term structural plan to address the issue.

“The cost-of-living (crisis) has not just shown up now, it has been building for the last decade of the failures of this government across all service delivery areas,” he said.

“The government spent more, borrowed more and taxed more and left Queenslanders with less to show for it.”

Mr Janetzki said the budget solely focused on “getting Steven Miles through the next four months to the election”.

The government announced $11.2bn of cost-of-living concessions in the budget, including electricity rebates, cutting car registration costs, and a six-month trial of 50c public transport fees.

RACQ general manager Joshua Cooney said the government was “doing everything they can” to ease the cost-of-living pressures for Queenslanders. He welcomed the public transport fare relief but wanted to see the government do something about the “out-of-control” petrol prices.

Together Union secretary Alex Scott praised the government for “listening to the state’s health workforce” after announcing a push for 45,000 extra health workers across a 10-year plan.
