Federal Liberal MP Craig Kelly was offered backing to replace Glenn Brookes in the NSW seat of East Hills but knocked the opportunity back.
Mr Kelly, under threat by moderates factional chief Kent Johns in a preselection battle for the federal seat of Hughes, was approached by Mr Brookes about replacing him in the state seat.
Mr Johns is understood to have the numbers.
The Australian understands Mr Brookes made Premier Gladys Berejiklian aware of his approach to Mr Kelly.
“It was suggested [the move to state] and I thought it was a ridiculous idea,” Mr Kelly said.
“Hughes is the electorate I represent and I intend to fight there.”
