Leaders’ debate verdict
The Opposition Leader got the audience vote, but what do our experts have to say?
Paul Kelly:
They walked about, pulled each other up, cracked a few jokes but challenged each other with Australian vigour — Scott Morrison had the best of the argument until the 45 minute mark when he stumbled on tax cuts for the better-off.
Bill Shorten was a cheeky schoolboy running for PM. He was sharp, witty, playing the performer, pitching to the audience, posing as bored and interrupting when Morrison spoke. Shorten was on top at the end.
Simon Benson:
The contest between Scott Morrison and Bill Shorten reflected how tight the election contest itself is becoming. There was no clear winner.
Troy Bramston: “Both leaders were on message and deftly handled questions. But
Morrison was sharper and his attacks were more effective, which gave
him a narrow victory over Shorten.”
Caroline Overington: Shorten won easily: he was fired up, while also displaying warmth and compassion, especially on youth suicide, special needs kids, military veterans, and his favourite teacher, his Mum. He looks confident, with good reason.
Scott Morrison and Bill Shorten faced off in their second leaders’ debate in Brisbane tonight.
