ICAC: Senior NSW Libs say Premier’s tenure is over
Senior NSW Liberals say Gladys Berejiklian’s tenure as Premier is over after today’s explosive ICAC evidence, as leading contenders emerge for the top job.
Senior NSW Liberals say Gladys Berejiklian’s tenure as Premier is over after today’s explosive ICAC evidence, with Attorney-General, Mark Speakman, and Treasurer, Dominic Perrottet, emerging as the leading contenders for the top job.
The Premier, who is still giving evidence at an ICAC inquiry, is already under pressure to resign over alleged conflicts involving her “close personal relationship” with former MP, Daryl Maguire – the man at the centre of the corruption inquiry.
While Mr Perrottet is positioned as a natural successor to Premier Berejiklian, some senior moderates are concerned he is too conservative, describing him as an “ultra right-winger” and saying they “won’t wear it”.
Mr Speakman is emerging as a rival contender and is said to have the support of some senior moderates, while others, like Matt Kean, are expected to support Mr Perrottet.
Mr Speakman, who did not respond to requests for comment, is also said to be “acceptable” to MPs on the hard-right.
Sources have indicated Rob Stokes could be a candidate in any leadership contest.
The NSW Premier’s office today has been working the phones, telling MPs Ms Berejiklian will not be resigning and had not breached the ministerial code of conduct.
But senior Liberal sources were adamant she would not survive the hearing.
“It goes to her judgement. Her moment of strength is now gone.”
Senior Liberals were today shocked to learn of Berejiklian’s relationship with Mr Maguire.
A senior Liberal MP said he was pleased to hear the Premier had a personal life, but was surprised it featured Mr Maguire.
