Former NSW premier Dominic Perrottet has quit NSW parliament and will move to the US for a senior role at BHP.

Mr Perrottet announced his departure from politics on Friday. “Today I have decided to resign from the NSW parliament after 13 years of public service,” he said.

“I got into politics to promote ideas and new ways of thinking and I am proud to have been part of a government that left NSW a much better place than we found it. I love NSW. It has been an absolute honour to represent the eight million people who call this great state home, especially as their 46th premier.”

Mr Perrottet has served on the backbench since losing last year’s election to Labor leader Chris Minns.

His departure comes shortly after that of former NSW treasurer Matt Kean, creating a likely double by-election in Mr Kean’s seat of Hornsby and Mr Perrottet’s Epping.

Mr Perrottet, his wife Helen and their seven children will move to the US where he will lead BHP’s office in Washington as US head of corporate and external affairs.

“Resources are hugely important to Australia and NSW, and BHP is a great Australian and NSW success story,” Mr Perrottet said. “I am looking forward to the opportunity to contribute to BHP’s global standing and business.”

Last week Mr Perrottet, 41, was spotted outside NSW parliament with former prime minister Scott Morrison following reports that the former premier was considering resigning.

“(Mr Perrottet) has left an indelible mark on our State,” NSW Opposition Leader Mark Speakman said. “He was a reformer who had a passion for new ideas and imagination for what would make NSW a better place for all. He delivered five budgets with strong surpluses and record infrastructure investment.”

“He helped guide us through the pandemic, championed reopening NSW, created financial support packages for families and small businesses, and swiftly opened international borders with the rest of Australia following, demonstrating his decisive leadership.

“His retirement marks the end of a career defined by visionary leadership and unwavering dedication to the people of NSW.”

Mr Perrottet was the youngest NSW premier in history upon election, aged 39. He served in the role for 18 months.
