Federal Election 2025: Peter Dutton is denied the ecstasy but at least he’s spared some of the agony

Peter Dutton’s career in politics is over.
After 24 years as an MP, Minister, Shadow Minister, Leader of the House and Leader of the Opposition Dutton has lost his seat in an electoral debacle for the Liberal Party.
Dutton’s concession – earlier than may have been normal because he had lost his seat – was gracious, brave and decent.
There was no rancour or bitterness and wished not only Anthony Albanese well but also the victor in the seat of Dickson.
With emotional sons and a tearful Kirily at his side Dutton was brief and to the point.
He mentioned the curse of Dickson being a one-term seat – he won it from Cheryl Kernot who only held it for one term – and revived a curse for the Liberals of the seats of leaders being lost as he joined John Howard, Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull as leaders whose seats were lost.
At least for Dutton there is no agonising over whether he should remain as leader or some dreadful fight among the Liberals as to who would take over.
The Liberals must now regroup around a new leader in even more dire circumstances than three years ago.
At least Dutton, as a man of means from his own efforts, does not have to worry about what he has to do for a living and, given his relative youth, can enter a new life and career.
The Liberals left behind are not as fortunate.
Politically the Labor victory will provide Anthony Albanese with a vindication and certainty of leadership he dearly wanted.
The danger is the defeat will be seen as a mandate for more of the same and not provide any pressure to change on policy or personnel despite the absolute necessity to do so.
