Federal election 2022: Mum’s the word
Mother’s Day didn’t slow down the campaign on Sunday with Scott Morrison flying his mum Marion all the way from Sydney and Albo paying tribute to his late mother.
Forget chocolates and scented candles for mother’s day. Why not treat mum to a political campaign rally?
Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s mum Marion, 79, was the guest of honour at a Liberal Party rally in the safe Labor electorate of Maribyrnong on Sunday.
Along with Jen and the girls of course.
Marion flew all the way from Bronte in Sydney’s eastern suburbs for the event, which was attended by senior Liberals including Treasurer Josh Frydenberg, and senators Jane Hume and James Paterson.
The PM posted a picture of Marion and Jenny on Instagram with the caption “The amazing women in my life. Couldn’t love them more. Happy Mother’s Day Jen and Mum!”
Both women clutch bouquets of lilies.
It was one of the few campaign events in Melbourne attended by both the PM and the Treasurer, amid speculation that Mr Morrison might be a hindrance rather than a help for Mr Frydenberg.
Morrison is yet to campaign in Kooyong across the city in Melbourne’s east, where the Treasurer is facing off Climate 200-backed candidate Monique Ryan.
Maribyrnong is held by former Labor leader Bill Shorten on a margin of 11.2 per cent.
Albo’s tribute
Anthony Albanese paid tribute to his late mother Maryanne on social media, who passed away in 2002 after suffering a brain aneurysm.
The Opposition Leader said Mother’s Day was always a bit difficult. It was the day his mother went to hospital and never returned, passing away in hospital a couple of weeks later.
“I remember it was a Sunday in autumn of 2002.
“I had just flown back to Sydney from Canberra to take my mum Maryanne and her sister Margaret out for Mother’s Day lunch.
“When I got to her home in Camperdown, I knew something wasn’t right.
“The front door had been left open.”
Maryanne suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and lived on the disability pension.
The pair lived in public housing in Camperdown.
Mr Albanese said witnessing Maryanne’s struggles inspired his politics and informed his belief the government could help people.
“Mum always gave me unconditional love.
“And I feel very privileged to have had that. Mums really are special.”
