Businesses have been handed up to $815,000 to employ Australians with a disability who want to work, as part of a $20m grants program.

Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth said successful applications covered a broad range of disability types across all states and territories, with the smallest grant worth $439,000 and the largest $815,000.

More than 300 applications were received under the open competitive selection process.

“Hiring a person living with disability should not be seen as a charitable act. It makes good business sense,” she said.

“(We are) working to support employers to understand and work with people with disability to create inclusive workplace cultures that allow people with disability to thrive.”

Ms Rishworth said the government was committed to improving the educational and employment opportunities for people with disability, while NDIS Minister Bill Shorten said the grants would boost their job pathways, regardless of whether they were a participant of the scheme.
