Federal Election 2022: Monique Ryan co-opts Malcolm Turnbull tirade in Kooyong
Monique Ryan has utilised the views of Malcolm Turnbull in her bid to oust Josh Frydenberg.
Climate 200-backed independent Monique Ryan has utilised the views of Malcolm Turnbull in her bid to oust his former energy and environment minister, Josh Frydenberg, from the Melbourne seat of Kooyong.
Dr Ryan issued new flyers on Monday featuring a photograph of Australia’s 29th prime minister and quoting comments he made last week in a speech to the Harvard Club of Washington DC.
Her campaign has also filmed a video with a local resident described as a “former Liberal voter”, who says he was “pleased when Malcolm Turnbull became prime minister” but is now voting for her in her contest against the Treasurer.
The flyers read: “Former primer minister Malcolm Turnbull has encouraged Australians to vote for independents. ‘If more of these “teal” independents win, it will mean the capture of the Liberal Party will be thwarted by direct, democratic action from voters.’ – Malcolm Turnbull, 29th Prime Minister of Australia.”
The flyers continue: “The Liberal Party is not as liberal as it used to be. Malcolm Turnbull said it well: ‘The Liberal Party’s moderate wing is diminished and diminishing.’
“You can see it in climate change where fossil fuel companies in Australia are receiving $22,139 of government subsidies every minute this financial year. Instead of fighting for a clean economy, our local MP Josh Frydenberg brings lumps of coal into parliament and laughs.
“You can see it on integrity, when only one Liberal MP had the courage to defy the Prime Minister and vote with her conscience for an anti-corruption commission. When it comes down to it, Josh Frydenberg votes the same as Barnaby Joyce 100% of the time. So what’s the answer?
“By voting 1 for me, Dr Monique Ryan, you’ll get an independent representative who will always vote with her values and who will do what is right for our community, with honesty, integrity and courage.
“Let’s make history in Kooyong!”
Neither Mr Turnbull nor Dr Ryan’s campaign responded to questions from The Australian over whether Mr Turnbull had authorised the flyer, and what had led Dr Ryan’s campaign to conclude that an endorsement from Mr Turnbull was likely to hold sway with Kooyong voters.
