Scott Morrison hit the hustings in Rockhampton on Wednesday with local member Michelle Landry, who has held the seat of Capricornia since 2013.

Speaking at the Rockhampton Museum of Art, Landry gave Matt Canavan a verbal smack after the Nationals senator ignited a particularly incendiary issue for the Coalition partyroom. “Pull your head in, Matt,” she said.

Canavan earned the ire of colleagues after declaring the ambition of net-zero emissions by 2050 as “dead’’.

And it may well be for Canavan.

But reducing emissions is front of mind for his city colleagues facing off with well-resourced teal independents. This includes Josh Frydenberg in Kooyong.

The Prime Minister said Canavan’s views were not the position of the party. “Everybody knows that Matt hasn’t been supportive of that position – there’s no news there,” he said.

Flights of fancy

The ALP isn’t letting leader Anthony Albanese’s Covid isolation get in the way of a good jaunt.

On Wednesday, the press pack rolled up to a Jason Clare-fronted conference at a childcare centre in the inner-west Sydney suburb of Strathfield in the seat of Reid.

Diary’s campaign spies said Clare was having the time of his life and gave a “masterclass” press conference performance, rating him 10/10.

Following the 9am presser, the campaign team was on a flight to Canberra at 11am for the unveiling of Labor’s economic package at 12.

Then there was a press conference with opposition Treasury spokesman Jim Chalmers at 1.30pm before everyone was bundled back on a plane to Sydney just before 4pm, which landed about 5pm.

An A for effort but potentially not the most environmentally friendly way to campaign.

The return flight would have generated about 0.07 tonnes of carbon per person, according to the online flight carbon footprint calculator, over the eight-hour campaign day.

All bets on, off, on

Labor has overtaken the Coalition as the bookies’ favourite to win the election.

Sportsbet has Labor on $1.55, while a Coalition victory is paying $2.40. In the hotly contested seat of Wentworth in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, Sportsbet has independent Allegra Spender on $1.80 and incumbent MP Dave Sharma on $1.90.

Bluebet also has the ALP on $1.58, while the Coalition is setting at $2.25.

Diary hopes readers are gambling responsibly.
