Left wing activist group GetUp has outlined its election strategy, saying it will be the organisation’s “biggest ever campaign effort” with the key objective to elevate climate change as a priority issue for voters.

The organisation says it will aim to rally more than 7000 volunteers to its agenda in a bid to remove the “hard right’s hold on power” and topple the Morrison government, with the group targeting 30 electorates across the nation.

GetUp has informed The Australian that its support base will come together to try and unseat Coalition MPs including Peter Dutton from his Queensland seat of Dickson and Christian Porter who holds the West Australian seat of Pearce.

Other high profile targets include Tony Abbott in the Sydney based electorate of Warringah and Nicolle Flint who holds the South Australian seat of Boothby.

GetUp will also target two key Victorian seats including Flinders — held by Greg Hunt — as well as the electorate of Menzies which is held by Kevin Andrews.

In a statement issued this morning, GetUp said that its members would “beat the drum for climate action” in electorates like Kooyong — held by Treasurer Josh Frydenberg — where the Liberals face a threat from progressive voters who are concerned about the environment.

GetUp also says that, on election-day, it will be able to muster 3,000 volunteers across 30 electorates and “show people how to vote for the climate and other key issues at 300 booths”.

“We’ve given people the chance to take action in their own homes, their own streets, their own local neighbourhood, all over the country — and the response has been epic,” said GetUp’s national director Paul Oosting.

“We’re working together to make 2019 the year that communities came together to put people back at the centre of Australian politics. People everywhere are saying they’re tired of the divisive politics peddled by the Tony Abbotts and Peter Duttons of this world.”

“Removing the hard right from parliament will enable MPs to collaborate better, for a safe climate for our kids or to ensure we treat people seeking asylum humanely.

“They might even work together to strengthen the institutions that hold the powerful to account, like our ABC”.
