Coronavirus: Gladys Berejiklian much faster than dithering Dan Andrews

Contrary to the Victorian Premier’s assertions, NSW has moved much faster to impose restrictions than Victoria did in dealing with its second wave.

As he slammed shut Victoria’s border with NSW, Premier Daniel Andrews suggested he believed Gladys Berejiklian had been too slow to act on the northern beaches COVID-19 cluster, saying: “I’m not going to wait around while they add to their rules.”

However, contrary to the Victorian Premier’s assertions, NSW moved much faster to impose restrictions than Victoria did in dealing with its second wave in June.

A comparison of data shows Sydney’s Northern Beaches Local Government Area was put into lockdown on Saturday when 30 new cases were recorded. By comparison, the first lockdown of 10 postcodes in Victoria on June 30 did not occur until 64 new cases were recorded, a day after there were 75 new cases.

Ms Berejiklian imposed her lockdown just two days after the infection rate hit double figures; Mr Andrews waited for 16 days before imposing his.

For the purposes of comparison, “new cases” here include infections among international arrivals, as Victoria’s data during the period did not distinguish between locally acquired and hotel quarantine cases.
