EMBATTLED Queensland Crime and Misconduct Commission chairman Ross Martin has resigned in sensational circumstances, revealing he needs a lung transplant.

Mr Martin was under pressure from the Queensland government to quit over the bungled reclassification of secret files from the Fitzgerald inquiry into corruption 25 years ago.

But he said he was leaving the post because he needs transplant surgery for cystic fibrosis.

"In this highly unusual and likely never to be repeated collection of circumstances, but of course for health reasons, I have decided to take leave to progress as quickly as possible the process of ill-health retirement," he said.

"I no longer have the resources of health to continue to perform the job with the vigour that is necessary and as soon as I became conscious of that, I have decided to leave."

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman earlier today said Mr Martin should consider resigning.

It has been revealed the CMC knew about the release for 10 months but did not adequately protect the documents.
