PREMIER Campbell Newman would lose his seat in the Queensland parliament due to an apparent backlash against his tough-love approach to slashing government spending and public service jobs, according to a new poll.

The automated ReachTEL survey found that Labor would scoop up minor party preferences in his Brisbane seat of Ashgrove and nose out Mr Newman were the state election re-run now.

Ashgrove is home to a higher-than-average proportion of public servants, but the polls findings suggest that Mr Newman's public sector job cuts have brought to an end his honeymoon from the March 24 state election that delivered the LNP government. Labor was reduced to a rump of just seven MPs in the 89 seat parliament.

The robo-poll is considered less precise than those run by established polling companies such as Newspoll, but was broadly accurate during the recent state election campaign, when it regularly polled voter sentiment in the must-win electorate.

The ReachTEL survey of 661 residents was conducted last night. It found Mr Newman's primary vote had dipped nine percentage points since the March election. Asked how respondents rated Mr Newman's performance as premier, 26.8 per cent said it was "very good", while 33.1 per cent said it was "very poor". On the crucial question of whether Ashgrove residents supported Mr Newman's decision to reduce the size of the public service to decrease Queensland's debt, 45.3 per cent said they supported the move, while 46 per cent did not support the policy.
