Anthony Albanese notes Donald Trump never made it to Australia during the Coalition’s reign
Anthony Albanese notes that Donald Trump couldn’t make it to Australia during his first term, when the Coalition was in power.
Anthony Albanese has pointed to the fact Donald Trump wasn’t able to make it to Australia during his first four-year term of office, when the Coalition was in power, as he confirmed he’d told the president-elect he’d always be welcome to visit.
The Australian revealed on Wednesday that the Prime Minister, who is facing pressure from the Coalition over what they say is his “inaction” in dealing with Mr Trump, invited the president-elect to Australia in their first phone call after the November 5 election.
Mr Albanese said any trip down under would be organised through diplomatic channels and didn’t elaborate on whether Mr Trump had been receptive to his invitation. “The last time the Coalition were in government during Donald Trump’s presidency for four years, (he) was not able to visit Australia during that period,” the Prime Minister said.
“An American president will always be welcome in Australia.
“In the discussion that I had with him, I made it clear that he would always be welcome here.
“We spoke very constructively about engaging.”
Former ambassador to the US Joe Hockey said earlier this week whoever wins the next election should consider offering Mr Trump a state visit to Australia.
In June 2019, 10 months after he became prime minister, Scott Morrison invited Mr Trump to watch golf’s Presidents Cup in Melbourne in December of that year but the then president never made it to Australia.
