Anthony Albanese announces split with Carmel Tebbutt
Anthony Albanese has split up with his partner, former NSW deputy premier Carmel Tebbutt.
Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese has split up with his partner, former NSW deputy premier Carmel Tebbutt.
Mr Albanese, a former deputy prime minister and currently Labor’s infrastructure spokesman, said he was “deeply saddened” by the split.
“I am deeply saddened that my relationship of over 30 years with Carmel Tebbutt has ended in separation,” he said in a statement today.
“We will continue to share parenting responsibilities of our 18-year-old son Nathan, who has successfully completed his HSC and has developed into an outstanding young man who we are both proud of.
“There are no third parties involved. I would ask that our privacy be respected at this time.”
Mr Albanese and Ms Tebbutt were known as one of Labor’s greatest power couples as they rose through the ranks of federal and state politics respectively.
Ms Tebbutt retired from politics in 2015 after more than nine years in the NSW parliament, where she served as deputy leader of the NSW Labor Party under both Nathan Rees and Kristina Keneally.
Mr Albanese ran against Bill Shorten for the Labor leadership in 2013 after Kevin Rudd lost government. He served as Mr Rudd’s deputy in 2013, and was a senior minister under both him and Julia Gillard.
