A third person has died following a suspected poisoning from mushrooms in country Victoria.

Victoria Police said on Saturday they were investigating the incident after the four – including two men aged 68 and 70 – were rushed to hospital on July 30.

On Friday, the women, aged 66 and 70, died in hospital.

Late Saturday, a 70-year-old man passed away.

A 68-year-old man remains in hospital.

The Sunday Herald Sun reported the group were believed to have been eating wild mushrooms at a private lunch in Gippsland.

A Baptist pastor, his wife, her sister and her sister’s husband were enjoying lunch together at a house in Leongatha on Saturday, July 29.

The four people were taken to hospital the next day, with suspected poisoning after eating the wild mushrooms.

Their condition deteriorated and they were transferred to intensive care.

On Friday the two sisters, aged 66 and 70, both from Korumburra, died, while the 70-year-old man died late Saturday.

The Sunday Herald Sun has been told the community was concerned about further poisonings.

According to 7 News, the group did not realise the wild mushrooms were poisonous.

Police told The Weekend Australian they were investigating the matter but were unsure whether it involved foul play.

Police said the investigation was continuing and the force was liaising with the Department of Health.

It occurred in the Gippsland town of Leongatha, in eastern Victoria, and police were notified on August 4 that the women had died in hospital.

“Police have been notified in relation to an incident where four people were taken to hospital with suspected poisoning on 30 July,’’ a spokeswoman said.

Police said they did not know the exact circumstances of the incident “and it is not known if the matter is suspicious”.
