Scott Morrison is heading into the Queensland fire zone as he meets with local families hit by recent bushfires, as authorities fear blazes could spark up again in dangerous weather conditions.

The Prime Minister will visit the site of the razed Binna Burra Lodge and tour the fire-affected neighbourhood of Beechmont, if conditions allow.

Mr Morrison will then head for an emergency response briefing at Canungra Fire Station and meet with local families and volunteers there.

“Our government is supporting both the New South Wales and Queensland governments through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Funding Recovery Arrangements,” Mr Morrison told parliament earlier this week.

“They can expect the same support that we were able to provide so quickly and swiftly to the people of Queensland in the floods. We’ll also be there for those affected by fires.”

Firefighters are bracing for a wind change that could cause bushfires to flare again in Queensland’s charred south.

Crews managed to get the upper hand over the past two days, thanks to cooler temperatures and higher humidity.

Dozens of fires are still burning statewide but there is no immediate threat. But authorities remain on their guard with a major wind change expected from about midday on Friday, teamed with temperatures four to five degrees above the September average.

One of the fires still burning is in the Lamington National Park, inland from the Gold Coast, where the heritage-listed Binna Burra lodge was destroyed on Saturday night.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is also in Canungra to meet locals and receive on-the-ground fire briefings.

The Premier was criticised earlier this week for going to Geneva, Switzerland to advocate for the state’s 2032 Olympic Games bid while fires blazed.
