Scott Morrison says Gladys Berejiklian displayed “heroic qualities” as NSW Premier, with federal Coalition MPs praising her tenure as the state’s leader.

The Prime Minister said Ms Berejiklian had been a strong leader for NSW during the pandemic.

“I know how much she is trusted and respected by the people of NSW, and I have no doubt that Gladys will always conduct herself in a way that suits the integrity of the office that she’s held,” he said.

“And I know how seriously she takes that trust. I’ve always found Gladys to be a person of the highest integrity.”

Anthony Albanese used Ms Berejiklian’s resignation to revive Labor’s push for a federal anti-corruption body.

“It is now more than 1000 days since Scott Morrison promised to have a national anti-corruption body. Well,
tick-tock Mr Morrison. We need a national anti-corruption commission,” the Opposition Leader said. “One with teeth. One that operates independently of government, and is able to conduct its own inquiries.

“And if you won’t give the Australian people one, a federal Labor government will do just that. Because we need to have confidence in the integrity of our political system.”

Federal Liberal MP Jason Falinski declared “ICAC continues to perpetuate gross injustices”, after the body announced it was conducting an investigation into the Premier.

“It is an organisation in the last 12 months who openly threatened the parliament if it did not get a budget increase,” Mr Falinski told The Australian.

“This is an organisation that could not find any corruption in the Carr and Keneally government until they were voted out of office and then refused to investigate any activities going back two years.”
