ChatGPT maker Sam Altman is scheduled to meet Industry and Science Minister Ed Husic on Friday morning in Parliament House.

Mr Altman is the chief executive and co-founder of OpenAI, the company behind the breakthrough AI chatbot.

Australia is slated to be the last stop on OpenAI’s international tour, in which Mr Altman has visited and spoken in cities, including Washington DC, London, Paris, Lagos, Brussels, New Delhi, Seoul and more.

Mr Altman will be in Melbourne later on Friday, where he is scheduled to give an address.

His visit comes just weeks after the government announced an eight-week consultation period into AI regulation.

“Given our interest in the safe and responsible use of AI, this meeting is perfectly timed,” Mr Husic said.

“The Albanese government wants modern laws to manage modern tech, to help build trust and confidence in AI.

“I’m looking forward to getting a better understanding of how OpenAI is managing community concerns about AI.

“They have built the fastest-growing user base in the history of the internet, so I’m keen to hear them out.”

ChatGPT was estimated to have accumulated 100 million users by January, just two months after its launch. On his world tour, Mr Altman has met with multiple leaders, including UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, French President Emmanuel Macron, and European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen.

In Washington DC, he made an appearance before a senate committee to urge regulation of AI and called for an International Atomic Energy Agency-style regulatory body on the technology.

Mr Altman was one of the signatories to a recent statement that warned “mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war”.
