Nuclear material uncovered during raid in Arncliffe in Sydney’s south
Emergency services personnel are directing residents away from the block of units in the Sydney suburb of Arncliffe, which is cordoned off with hot zone tape.
The Australian Border Force has found what is believed to be nuclear material during a raid in Sydney’s south, with men in hazmat suits and oxygen tanks entering an apartment block on a shutdown suburb street.
Emergency services personnel including Fire and Rescue and NSW Police officials on Thursday directed residents away from the block of units on Kelsey St, which was cordoned off with hot zone tape.
It is understood authorities believe nuclear isotopes have been found.
The ABF confirmed that an operation was underway in Arncliffe and urged locals to follow directions from emergency services.
“The ABF can confirm it is conducting an operation today in Arncliffe, NSW, with the support of NSW emergency services,” said the spokesperson.
“All appropriate safety measures are being implemented.
“People in vicinity of the location are urged to follow all directions from emergency services.
“Further updates will follow as appropriate.”
