Australian actress Nicole Kidman looked sombre as she farewelled her late mother, Janelle, at a private memorial service in Sydney on Tuesday afternoon.

Janelle died aged 84 in September after a long illness, just hours before Nicole was awarded the Best Actress for her role in Babygirl at the Venice Film Festival.

The A-list Hollywood actress, 57, attended with her husband Keith Urban and their daughters Sunday Rose, 16, and Faith Margaret, 14, who were spotted at the St Francis Xavier church in Lavender Bay, in Sydney’s north.

“I am in shock and I have to go to my family but this award is for her, she shaped me, she guided me, and she made me,” Kidman said in a letter read by Babygirl director Halina Reijn at the award ceremony.

Nicole wore all-black, her hair pulled back in a bow, as her husband wore a black suit and a black tie.

Her daughters were comforted by former 10 presenter Jessica Rowe’s model daughter Allegra Overton at their grandmother’s funeral.

Nicole’s younger sister Antonia, 54, was also in attendance with her husband Craig Marran during the private family service.

After laying the coffin down, Nicole was enveloped in an embrace by her husband who remained by her side.

Janelle worked in medicine throughout her career, meeting her husband, Antony, during her study of nursing at the University of New South Wales. The couple lived between Sydney, Washington DC and Honolulu through the 1960s and 1970s.

She was a strong political advocate with a membership in the Women’s Electoral Lobby and protested for an end to the Vietnam War.

Janelle’s funeral was held in the same location where the Kidman family farewelled her father Antony back in 2014 at the age of 75, almost exactly 10 years prior to Janelle’s passing.

The Australian actress is regarded as a strong contender for another Academy Award for her performance in the controversial film.
