Man charged with having with loaded AK-47 inside Melbourne home
Intellectually disabled man with anger issues charged with hiding a cache of firearms, including a machine gun, in Melbourne home.
A man who has an intellectual disability and needs to be medicated for anger issues has been charged with hiding a cache of firearms - including a loaded AK-47 machine gun.
Emre Gurlu, 24, also had a sawn-off shotgun with cartridges propped up beside it, a semiautomatic rifle wrapped in cloth and a silver handgun in a toiletries bag, police allege.
Armed Crime detectives told the court they will investigate possible links to terrorism after the guns were found in his sister’s Glenroy home on Friday morning.
Officers swooped on the Gladstone Parade property - close to a kinder - at 9.30am, the Herald Sun reports.
Ammunition for multiple guns was also found, police say.
Mr Gurlu was arrested and charged with possession of unregistered guns and trafficking firearms.
He appeared via video link at Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court.
“Armed crime is making further inquires into terror and previous shootings,” Victoria Police senior constable Jeff Dart told the court.
“Those inquiries are still being made.
“His (Mr Gurlu’s) brother told him to mind something important at the address.”
The officer said Mr Gurlu knew there were guns in the house but did not alert police.
Defence lawyer George Douglas has represented the Turkish man multiple times over the past few years.
“This certainly is an escalation,” Mr Douglas said.
The court heard Mr Gurlu, who has an intellectual disability, was not currently taking any medication but that he should be medicated for anger issues.
“When he is off his meds, when pushed the wrong way, he can get a bit angry,” Mr Douglas said.
The accused man did not apply for bail and the case was adjourned until December 14.
