Thousands of dollars were raised online for the funeral of Melbourne murder victim Laa Chol yesterday as family members thanked wellwishers for their support.

More than $6000 were raised on a GoFundMe page for Ms Chol’s funeral launched by African-Australian leaders yesterday.

Sources have told The Australian Chol’s body has not yet been released by the coroner as investigators continue to go through dozens of witnesses and 50 hours of CCTV footage.

African-community leader Eva Scarr started the fundraiser and said the family had consented to the campaign.

“The family were initially hesitant because ‘traditionally Anyuak community mourn quietly and peacefully together until the burial,” she said, “Laa Chol’s parents have now given consent to lead the campaign.”

Ms Scarr, who recently started a floral memorial outside the Eq Tower where Ms Chol was found by police, said an uncle of the victim would be handed the funds directly and that she had started the campaign due to concerns over the reporting of Ms Chol’s death.

“After watching and listening to the media and responses to Laa Chol’s passing, it was clear that very little good was being publicly said about her,” she said.

“I am doing this out of genuine concern for the big picture issue here — showing respect for a young life lost. The funds, which will be used by the family for her funeral and to support them during this difficult time.”

“Laa Chol’s parents sent messages of thanks to me and the rest of the community working in the background to support the family and the African community.”

The GoFundMe page’s target is $12,000.

A 16-year-old youth was charged with being and accessory to murder and assault on Wednesday night. He did not appear before the Children’s Court yesterday but prosecutors said they would make an application to have his case “uplifted” to a higher court.

Ms Chol died last Saturday of injuries sustained after an out-of-control party at a Melbourne Airbnb apartment.

A 17-year-old boy faced the Children’s Court on Tuesday charged with her murder and was remanded in custody.

The 16-year-old charged with accessory also faced a count of assault and possession of methamphetamine. He did not apply for bail and will next face court on August 16.

Prosecutors told the court they would apply to move their case to a higher court on August 27.
