Milton Orkopoulos arrested for second time since release from prison

The former NSW Labor politician and convicted pedophile has been arrested for a second time since his release from prison late last year.

Former NSW Labor politician and convicted pedophile Milton Orkopoulos will reappear in court on Thursday after allegedly breaching his parole conditions for a second time since his release from prison.

Corrective Services NSW said their officers sought to revoke Orkopolous’ parole after discovering he was in possession of an “unapproved mobile phone” during a routine inspection.

It’s understood the 62-year-old had been using a smartphone in contravention of his parole conditions. The former Aboriginal affairs minister was subsequently arrested at a home in Malabar about 7am on Wednesday.

His case was briefly mentioned at Waverley Local Court where he faced three charges of failing to comply with his reporting obligations. He did not apply for bail; his lawyer, Omar Juweinat, did not respond to a request for comment, and the matter is expected to be heard again on Thursday for a bail application.

It is the second time that Orkopolous has been arrested since his release from prison on child sex offences. In January he was charged after allegedly creating an Instagram account and failing to notify police for several days. He has pleaded not guilty to that offence, plus another in which he is alleged to have spoken to a child during a phone call with one of his adult children.

That matter is expected to be mentioned again in March.

Orkopolous was elected to NSW parliament in 1999 as the MP for Swansea and was appointed Aboriginal affairs minister in 2005. He spent 11 years in prison for 30 drug and child sex offences before being released from Long Bay jail.
