Man’s hands severed in workplace accident

A farm worker has lost both his hands and is in a serious condition after an industrial accident.

A farm worker is in a serious condition after has hands were severed when both arms caught in a piece a machinery at a mushroom farm in southeast Queensland this morning.

Paramedics were called to Country Farm Fresh Mushrooms in Ballandean, near Stanthorpe, around 7.50am this morning to find a man in his 40s who had both arms trapped in a piece of machinery.

Police and fire services were called to help free the man, with an anaesthetist and two nurses sent from Stanthorpe Hospital to assist rescuers.

The man was treated for burns and blood loss and transported via LifeFlight helicopter to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane.

Executive manager of operations — Darling Downs, Glen Maule, described the injuries as “extremely serious.”

“He has suffered some very serious injuries and has quite a serious amount of blood loss from the injuries sustained in this incident,” he said.

Others on the scene were treated for shock.

Queensland Workplace Health and Safety are investigating.
