A man ran at police with a samurai sword before being shot dead by an officer at a home in Brisbane’s southwest this morning, Queensland Police say.

In a statement, police said they were called to a house in Cassowary St, Doolandella, around 5.30am.

They discovered a 41-year-old man — armed with the sword — was inside with two women as well as four children under the age of 10 who were known to him.

“Police negotiated with the man and subsequently, the woman and children were released from the home.

“Around 7.45am, the man confronted officers with the sword outside the residence and an officer discharged his firearm, wounding the man.

“Paramedics immediately treated the man, however, he was declared deceased at 8.15am.”

Inspector Tim Partridge said the man was shot dead by a senior constable.

“He has run at the officer with a samurai sword,” Inspector Partridge said.

The officer was “understandably stressed, but he’s comfortable in the fact that he didn’t have any other option”.

One of the freed women was his partner and mother of the children, while the other was a housemaid.

The Ethical Standards Command had commenced a critical incident investigation into the police response with oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
