Wallabies legend Toutai Kefu and his children are out of hospital after the shocking burglary at their family home that turned into a violent attack with a knife, axe and machete.
Kefu has sent a message to family and friends on social media, saying his wife Rachel remains in hospital after an operation for serious cuts to her arm but is expected to be released on Thursday.
They were attacked at their home at Coorparoo in southeast Brisbane in the early hours of Monday morning after waking to find intruders, who demanded the keys to their car.
Taken to hospital with stab wounds to his abdomen, Kefu was initially listed as being in a critical condition before undergoing surgery.
The couple’s 21-year-old son Josh and 18-year-old daughter Madi were also injured defending themselves and treated in hospital.
The family has had support from around the world, with messages from the Wallabies and All Blacks.
“Wow. Humbling to see the outpouring of love and well wishes from family, friends, community members and the general public,” Kefu, 47, head coach of the Tongan national team, wrote on Wednesday.
“We are all doing well. Josh, Madi & myself are out of hospital and we’re hoping Rach will be able to join us tomorrow.
“We just want to say thank you for everyone’s support we feel very lucky and grateful. The Kefu’s.”
