Kayaker found dead off Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula
A kayaker has been found dead after falling from his inflatable kayak hundreds of metres off a Mornington Peninsula pier.
A Victorian kayaker has died in waters off the Mornington Peninsula on Thursday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to Rosebud Pier about 3:30pm following reports a man in an inflatable kayak had run into difficulty about 300-800 metres offshore.
The man was seen fall into the water and a search operation was commenced soon after.
The man’s body was located about 5:30pm, two hours after the initial reports were made.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
The man’s death is the latest in a spate of fatal drownings across Australia, with six people dying in NSW since Christmas.
According to Royal Life Saving Australia, 30 people have drowned in Australian waters since the start of December, six more than this time last year.
