Journalists from The Australian earn a slew of nominations for the News Awards

The Australian has picked up a slew of nominations for the prestigious News Awards, featuring as finalists for best scoop, best investigation and young journalist of the year. The Australian Business Network is guaranteed to pick up a prize.

The Australian has picked up a slew of nominations for the prestigious News Awards, which showcase the best work published this year by News Corp journalists serving and advocating for Australian communities.

The Australian’s journalists picked up nine nominations across seven categories.

Sharri Markson is nominated in the Investigations category for Kimberley Kitching and the mean girls – about infighting within the Labor Party. Simon Benson and Geoff Chambers earned a joint nomination for best scoop with their revelation that former prime minister Scott Morrison took on five portfolios during the pandemic.

Markson earned a scoop nomination with Kylar Loussikian in the Visual and Audio category, for Cooked: CEO quits over explicit video about Lark Distilling boss Geoff Bainbridge.

Hedley Thomas, David Murray and the team behind Shandee’s Story earned a joint nomination for best investigation in the Visual and Audio category for their true crime podcast on the killing of Shandee Blackburn.

The Australian Business Network is guaranteed to win the Keith McDonald Prize for Business Journalism, taking all three finalist spots with Perry Williams alongside joint nominations for Glenn Norris and Chris Herde, and Nick Evans and John Stensholt.

Liam Mendes is nominated for Young Journalist of the Year for his coverage of the NSW floods.

Kristin Shorten, Matt Cunningham and Claire Harvey earned a joint nomination in the Campaign category for their documentary piece, Exposing what really happened in Yuendumu, which interviewed key figures in the life of Kumanjayi Walker, who was shot dead by police in 2019.

Winners will be announced at the awards gala on November 8.
