John Howard is recovering following an operation for appendicitis at the North Shore Private Hospital in Sydney.

The former prime minister, 81, was taken to hospital on Monday after a visit to his private doctor because he was experiencing pain.

He was taken by ambulance to the North Shore Private Hospital where he was diagnosed with appendicitis and underwent surgery.

Mr Howard was said to be “recovering well”.

Mr Howard, who had a stent inserted several years ago, told The Australian on Monday night that he wanted to thank all his “well wishers” and “particularly the staff” at the hospital.

There was no suggestion the visit to the doctor’s surgery and hospital transfer were linked to the coronavirus.

Mr Howard, known as an enthusiastic walker during his time as prime minister, regularly plays golf and continues to walk.
