Jackie Trad will nominate as Labor candidate for South Brisbane amid CCC probe
Jackie Trad declares ‘a week is a long time in politics’, referring to a crime and corruption probe she faces, while stating her intention to run.
Queensland’s former deputy premier Jackie Trad will nominate for Labor in the seat of South Brisbane at the October state election.
In a lengthy Facebook post today, Ms Trad said a “week is a long time in politics,” referring to her decision to resign from the ministry amid a Crime and Corruption Commission investigation.
Sitting MPs had until Monday to declare if they would nominate for the 2020 election.
Trad has held her seat since 2012, and in 2017 held off Greens candidate Amy MacMahon amid a 10.2 per cent swing against Labor in South Brisbane.
“There will be much (misplaced) media interest in whether I nominate to recontest South Brisbane today. I am on the record on this matter,” Ms Trad said in her Facebook post. “I will be nominating for South Brisbane for the Labor Party.”
“The community of South Brisbane deserves a representative that stands up for them and stands with them on the things that matter – the things that we’re passionate about, like:
“Continuing our transition to clean, renewable energy, particularly through Queensland’s newly established, publicly owned, renewable energy company CleanCo;
“Making sure young people are properly supported during and after the COVID crisis has passed – Newstart must stay at the boosted JobSeeker level;
“Helping our vibrant and crucial small business community to get back to normal operation after the massive impact of COVID;
“Making sure our health system and health workers are properly resourced, so we all get the quality care we need, when we need it, particularly in the coming months;
“Pursuing a meaningful Treaty with Queensland’s First Nations peoples, in our ongoing journey toward full reconciliation and unity; and
“Protecting our unique South Brisbane community by securing more green spaces, improving local transport and supporting our wonderful community organisations.
“I have championed these issues for Queenslanders and for the South Brisbane community and, at this election, I’ll be asking the South Brisbane community for their support to continue the job.”
