It’s the Oscars, brought to you by Ozempic…

Oscars so white is dead. Oscars so thin is in. The red carpet was banished and replaced with a champagne arrivals rug as organisers wanted a more “mellow” entry to the world’s most revered awards show.

They were aiming for “beach at sunset” but the result was a beige fashion affair at the 95th Academy Awards. Best supporting actress winner Jamie Lee Curtis wore a sequin long-sleeve champagne Dolce & Gabbana gown that had more fizz than vintage Dom Perignon. “Apparently at the Oscars their carpet is going to match my drapes,” she tweeted before arriving.

But individual style was replaced with professional stylists and bodies that looked emaciated instead of excited this year. Red carpet commentary by outlets such as E! have evolved into quasi-election night panels. “My sources tell me …” was the most common refrain heard during the pre-show show as a panel of talking heads dissected the raft of designer looks that strolled up the new neutral carpet.

The network now has an entertainment style correspondent who has the stylists to the stars on speed dial who offered up intel and had the skinny on the stars and their Oscars night outfits.

Skinny being the keyword here. In case you’ve missed all the hullabaloo happening both at pharmacies around the world and online – weight loss is the new black. The 2023 Oscars were (unofficially) sponsored by Ozempic.

A drug meant for type 2 diabetics to moderate their blood sugar, it’s also being used by people to lose weight quickly. Due to doctors prescribing the drug “off script” – meaning people are willing to pay a lot of money for it – it’s now caused a worldwide shortage of the lifesaving drug for legitimately sick people.

It all started with Kim Kardashian reportedly using Ozempic to fit into Marilyn Monroe’s dress for last year’s Met Gala and culminated at the Oscars with Hollywood’s biggest stars looking almost one-dimensional instead of just sounding it.

So prevalent is the drug in Hollywood right now it has spawned a New York Magazine investigation, and Jimmy Kimmel, the host of the Academy Awards, made mention of it in his opening monologue.

“As I look out in the crowd tonight, I can’t help but wonder, ‘Is Ozempic right for me?’ ” Kimmel said, as the room politely chuckled before ignoring his comment that he had left food under their seats.

Emily Blunt – the star of the film version of The Devil Wears Prada – turned heads in a white column gown by Valentino. It was simple, sophisticated and chic. She looked stunning and rail thin. It was almost like life imitating art.

“I’m on this new diet. Well, I don’t eat anything and when I feel like I’m about to faint I eat a cube of cheese. I’m just one stomach flu away from my goal weight,” her character, serendipitously also called Emily, said back in 2006.

Lady Gaga kept everyone guessing about whether she would perform the song she wrote for Top Gun: Maverick. While the star of the film, Tom Cruise, didn’t attend, Lady Gaga made a dazzling entrance in a sheer black Versace corset dress, the skirt of which was the only element of her appearance that could be described as “full”. However, most viewers were more interested in how quickly the singer removed her heavy red-carpet makeup and designer garb and slipped into a pair of ripped jeans and a T-shirt for her stirring performance of Hold My Hand.

While the Oscars were missing the chutzpah of Cruise, the blokes were as brave as Maverick with their fashion choices. Nominee Paul Mescal donned a white dinner suit with flared pants courtesy of Gucci, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson opted for a “ballerina pink” silk jacket. His stylist Ilaria Urbinati said she wanted to “flick the switch” and show off a different side to his masculinity.

Best actor nominee Austin Butler looked as if he’d come straight from Paris Fashion Week, not only for his Saint Laurent tuxedo and Cuban-heel boots but also for his gaunt appearance, a silhouette fashion insiders attribute to the high fashion shows in the French capital. Butler’s immersion in the fashion world has become deeper as his relationship with model Kaia Gerber has continued. Gerber is the daughter of supermodel Cindy Crawford.

It takes a lot to make Glass Onion star Kate Hudson look like a mere mortal but compared with her po-faced peers she stole the sartorial show in an off-the-shoulder silver gown by Rodarte. She was a glowing beacon of beauty in the sea of svelte statues.
