Anthony Albanese has announced the voice to parliament referendum will be held on October 14.

Next week The Australian is holding a special event hosted by editor-in-chief Michelle Gunn with Vote Yes campaigner and Indigenous leader Noel Pearson.

They will appear together with The Front’s Claire Harvey on stage at The Mint, 10 Macquarie St, Sydney on Tuesday September 5, 2023, from 6pm.

Gunn said this was a significant moment in the voice referendum debate.

“The Australian believes it is important to hear directly from leaders of both the Yes and No cases in the voice referendum. That is why we are providing a forum for Noel Pearson to speak directly to our readers on this historic decision,” she said.

Tickets are available at no charge only for The Australian’s subscribers.

Canapes and drinks will be served from 6pm at the September 5 event.

Mr Pearson is a leading and well-respected voice in the debate. He was a member of the referendum council appointed by the Turnbull government in 2015, a group that was to advise on a “successful referendum” to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Constitution. He was also a member of the Indigenous voice co-design senior advisory group, established by the former Morrison government in 2019, that was to lead the process to “develop local, regional and national elements of an Indigenous voice”.

Mr Pearson rose to prominence in the 1990s as a key negotiator and spokesperson following the High Court’s Mabo decision and his insight has been widely sought on matters relating to Indigenous Australians.

“A new generation of Aboriginal leaders emerged into the national spotlight out of the Mabo negotiations – young lawyer Mr Noel Pearson among them,” The Australian wrote in January 1994, in an article asking readers to write in to nominate the masthead’s Australian of the year.

In 2013 Mr Pearson, along with Warren Mundine, Marcia Langton, Adam Goodes and Andrew Forrest won The Australian’s Australian of the year award.

The Australian will also hold a live event with a leading No campaigner in the near future.
